I stand corrected. Wool covers are critical. They hold tight the whole package which is diaper + insert, something a wool shortie cannot.
The problem arises when a wool cover cannot completely cover the diaper, leading to night time leaks. That’s when you either pop on a wool shortie or use a smaller diaper.
But if you had to get only one, I’d go for the cover. Measure your baby and any existing diapers you’ll be using with it very carefully.
If all fails you can still buy a shortie and hope your child doesn’t complain to you that it is itchy!
Mephala is a strange and rather interesting

Hello! I found your blog through figur8′s and am pleased to know that you cloth diaper at night! I have started myself not too long ago but am still resorting to disposables when I run out.
My question is: do the kids wear anything over the bulky wool cover? Do you find their skin warm to touch under the layers? The hubs is complaining about the fitted/wool cover combo I currently use.

Hi Chin Li,
I’m so happy to find another cloth diapering mama.
The kids just wear their pjs over the wool cover. Actually my son tells me it is cooler than disposables or the BumGeniuses.
I don’t recall their bums being warm or sweaty actually but I do remember their bums sweating in the disposables.
Which fitted and wool cover combo are you using?
My hubby complains about it too (complexity of stuffing and layering compared to a disposable).
Cheers,
Christina

It is good to be able to obtain feedback from the ultimate “consumer”! I have many nights, wished our fellow could tell me which was more comfortable!! Wool is the way to go.
I have been using the Dream Eze fitteds, and the BBH wool cover. It is bulky but so far (and touch wood) we have not had leaks.
I have to figure out this absorbency issue though. The last two times I undid the diaper at 5am, (our fellow sleeps at 7am) it was soaking wet… every part of the diaper was! Another of hubby’s concern. Tonight I will try the BBH bamboo fitted with the BBH wool cover. I hope it works better.
The bum geniuses are hot alright. Those were our first diapers and I only used them once at night. I am thinking of getting rid of them, but still a little hesitant for sentimental reasons. Sad huh? Whoever would have thought I would be attached to a cloth diaper!

sorry… correction. Our fellow sleeps at 7pm!

Aye. Bear told me the wool shorties were itchy. Sigh. If Organic Merino Wool is too itchy, I don’t know what won’t be. Incidentally he is using the exact same O-Wool wool cover but I guess it is just that it doesn’t touch much of his skin so he doesn’t complain.
What is BBH? How do you find the Dream Ezes? Any retailers in Singapore and Malaysia or did you order them direct from the US? I’ve been wanting to try them. They look awesome.
As for the absorbency issue, trust the wool to absorb 3x its own weight so although the diaper is soaked, it is contained. Great that you’ve had no leaks.
LOL! Me too!
But I do want to sell my BumGeniuses. I got 7 cos I wanted Kitten to wear the pretty pink shades but she rarely uses them.

BBH = Baby Beehinds. I bought the wool covers because they were on clearance, and they looked easy with the velcro.
I love the Dream Eze fitted and its side snapping. They are a good fit. Yes they do look great However, I don’t think they soak up as much as the bamboo fitteds though, and probably are a little harder to layer (there isn’t much space!).
I bought them from tinytapir.com in Malaysia though I think their stock is limited at the moment. There are several online stores here in Malaysia which stock them. I tried contacting the US seller but I don’t think they ship to Malaysia. I did not get a response.
I spoke too soon about not having leaks.
Leaks that very night with the BBH Bamboo fitteds under the L size cover. I suspect its from wicking – the fitted diaper was too large for the cover! The leak was at the top of the pajama trousers. I didn’t have this problem with the Dream Eze Fitted as it provides a much trimmer fit compared to the BBH Bamboo fitted; perhaps I did not wrap it tight enough. Will try, try and try again of course!
Do you cloth diaper when your kids are out and about?

Ah okay. How much did you get them for? The wool covers are quite expensive but I guess they last a while. Mine cost US$32 on average, before shipping. But over the long term, we save over disposables.
Oh dear. Yeah. Could be wicking. If the diapers feel a bit sticky after a wash, try running it on a quick rinse without any detergent after. I’ve been using Seventh Generation detergent, and only 1 small tablespoon each time but still it overloads the diapers sometimes.
We get leaking from the top too, and yes, if the diaper is bigger than the wool cover, it will leak (hence I have been understuffing), and sometimes from above the leg and under. But only Bear. I think he just moves around a lot when he sleeps. Kitten sleeps like a log.
I guess the solution may be to either buy a bigger wool cover and save the current one for day when no stuffing is needed? Or use the bamboos in the day? But do try again. As long as the diaper is hidden by the wool cover it appears to work.
Yup, I cloth diaper 24/7. Just carry a wet bag around. Very heavy though because the diapers are heavier than disposables and even heavier when wet! LOL. The things we do for the environment and our kids.

I got the BBH wool covers for AUD15 each. But you are right, they are a long term investment. If we really get this up and running, I might invest in more. Might check out other wool covers. The problem is, our guys but is now pretty big already. We are bursting out of the L diapers! AND is a super heavy wetter at night.
I NEVER imagined I would be carrying a bag of smelly cloth diapers around. Ever. I even forgot one day and placed it on the table in a restaurant :O !! Motherhood. Can’t take me anywhere these days..

If he’s bursting then you need one size up. Save the older one as a spare.
AUD15 is reasonable. Most sell for about US$25 and above and the organic wool ones are US$30 and above.
LOL! Me too, and they are so heavy! I leave them around too. :p
