That First Baby Poop
Attachment Parenting, Cloth Diapering, Green Living, Peaceful Motherhood Add commentsKitten wore her Loveybums diaper set (cloth with wool cover) this morning after a wake-the-household poop. She’s almost outgrowing her newborn/small diaper and cover so I’d bought some mediums from Loveybums, which incidentally fit perfectly. She was 7kg at 2 months.
Suddenly after her nap and feed I heard that unmistakable sound – the prat sound that could only mean a second poop.
I gamely opened her wool cover. No stain. Her cloth diaper… Yellow poop concentrated on the fleece cover. I covered her back and brought her to the bathroom, took off the diaper and put it on the ground, washed her bottom then carried her.
I rinsed all the poop out but the fleece still looked a little yellow. In it went into the washing machine with Bear’s Loveybums diaper from last night.
Yes… I can do this again.
Update: She pooped again this evening before her bath. Like a pro, I brought her to the bathroom, removed her cloth diaper and hosed it down with hot water while we both bathed, and then put it in the laundry with the rest of the wash. Yay!
Mephala is a strange and rather interesting

lol I never used cloth with Zeb, although I was intrigued by the idea. I would def use them next time or maybe try EC (elimination communication). I can only image the ew factor to get over. You’d think since we use cloth toilet paper it wouldn’t be a big deal but it seems diapers would be so.much.more. than tp!! Interesting to read someone else’s take on it.
Thanks for the comment on my blog btw!
Glad to have turned you onto the idea of unschooling a bit. There are lots of great books if you’re interested in reading more. Anything at all by John Holt is fantastic!

Hi Tara! My best friend does EC but it takes a lot of dedication which I don’t have.
Yeah the eww factor was what held me back. But after washing my son’s bottom for over 3 years I think I am quite used to it.
Cloth toilet paper sounds awesome. It is the first I have heard of it but it sure is environmental.
I really really like the idea of unschooling but I think I will be crucified by all whom I know if I unschool my kids. Still, best I can do is delay formal schooling for as long as I can.
Thanks for stopping by! I’ll be sure to check out John Holt’s books.

I used to be a bit intimidated about the idea of cloth diapering too – not so much the peeing part but the pooping part. I think having my arms elbow deep in poop water (Gavin pooped into his bath water when he was a baby) was a good desensitising experience.
It’s funny how much ew factor I’ve adapted to since having a kid. To think that there was a point when I wouldn’t touch a tissue to wipe a kid’s saliva – look at me now.
As for the unschooling bit. I was also really keen on that at one point. A friend was telling me how she met a very engaging and dynamic 20 year old who had been completely homeschooled all her life. She was going to talk to her mother about how she handled the home schooling. Haven’t had a chance to find out more, but I was very intrigued.

Oh yes, I should add that one of the motivating factors for attempting to practice EC was to avoid the pooping in the diapers bit. We got quite good at it until we went to Australia in winter and Gavin objected to having his bottom exposed. Guess he was not used to the weather (even though I tried to heat up the bathroom first).

I must thank the stars Bear never pooped in his bath water…
I have to give unschooling much more thought, although in Asian society, the family will probably have me flayed alive.
Where did you meet this fortunate young woman?

Actually, I wasn’t the one to meet her. My friend did. She was so impressed, she was swayed towards the idea of home schooling. I have been meaning to ask her what she learned…
But you’re right – it’s not the sort of thing that sits well in an Asian society. I don’t know about Singapore, but I’ve been told it isn’t legal here to homeschool. The loophole around it is to register your child at a proper school, or something to that effect…

If you do talk to her, let me know. I’ve yet to meet someone homeschooled.
It is legal here but I heard homeschooled kids have lower priority to enter secondary school.
I would love too though, but honestly am not sure if I have the dedication and patience.

Will do. I understand your concerns. I, too, felt the same. Nevertheless, I was very impressed to hear how well the girls turned out.
